Title
U.S. Representative District 1
JIM HAGEDORN REPUBLICAN: ballotpedia Summary, he's got a lot of experience in DC, so far no negative publicity from liberals. He didn't get the GOP endorsement, but broke his promise not to run after concerns Miller can run a serious campaign and is running well produced TV ads on cable, and he's worked in DC, and his father was in Congress. In 1974, Jim’s father was elected to Congress to represent southern Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District. Shortly thereafter the family began splitting time between Washington, D.C. and Minnesota – spending the school year in the Virginia suburbs of DC and returning each summer to the Truman farm. Beginning at age 18, Jim worked full-time jobs as a busboy and telephone salesman to self-finance his education. Jim was accepted to George Mason University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Politics. In 1984, Jim was hired as the legislative assistant to former Minnesota Republican Congressman Arlan Stangeland. Jim handled an array of issues and successfully managed the Congressman’s legislative agenda, including stewardship of H.R. 916, a 1989 bipartisan “workfare” bill that required able-bodied welfare recipients to work for benefits. This bill was conceptually enacted into law shortly after Republicans won control of the House of Representatives in 1994. From 1991 to 1998, Jim served as the Director for Legislative and Public Affairs for the Financial Management Service, the U.S. Department of the Treasury agency responsible for the management of more than $2 trillion in Federal funds. 2009, Jim returned to his southern Minnesota roots and vied for the Republican nomination for Congress in Minnesota’s 1st District. Since, Jim has engaged in several entrepreneurial business ventures in Minnesota and throughout the United States. website*AARON MILLER REPUBLICAN GOP ENDORSED - conservative christian who made national media attention for complaints about teaching of evolution in high schools. KTTC
My name is Terry Throndson and I am running for Seat 5 on the Rochester School Board. I am a life long resident and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1970. I enlisted in the US Navy in 1971 and serve four years. I attended advance fire fighting, nuclear, biological and chemical and leadership schools. I am a Vietnam War Veteran. I received awards and letters of accommodations for my service. I came home and started my own business, Throndson Oil & LP Gas Company. My business continues today 32 years later.
I have driven school bus for over 7 years. Been a Junior Achievement Consultant for 12 years teaching at Willow Creek, Kellogg and Friedell Middle Schools. I continue to teach Patriotism at Pine Island, Byron, Rochester Schools and churches
I have been involved greatly in the community. In 2007 I was awarded the Rochester Mayor's Gold Medal Award for Community involvement. I am member of the Rochester Business Group. I am a Trustee and BOD member of the Soldier Field Veterans Memorial, BOD member of SE. MN. Honor Flight, and Chairman for Support Our Troops. Past BOD of Mn. Petroleum Marketers and MN. Patriot Guard Riders. I am a MN Patriot Guard and Wounded Warrior rider supporting our Veterans and their Families. A member of the "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" committee. Working with and helping Blue and Gold Star families. A supporter and sponsor for the Ronald McDonald House, Tee it up for the Troops and Ironwood Christian Ranch.
I am running for Rochester School Board to get our school district back to the basics of education. I have been a student of the ivory league and prestigious School of Hard Knocks. Here you not only pay for your education, but also for your mistakes. You learn your errors and success's quickly. I have attended various technical and business schools to earn my business licenses and various permits. I attend seminars to keep up to date with technology.
I built my business from my boot straps up. I have built my customer base from being honest, fair, educating my customers, to select quality products and employees. I have good communications skills. I know how to budget and manage a budget. Not afraid to ask for ideas/advice from customers and employees. I do not know everything, but know enough to know when and where to ask for those who would be knowledgeable to help find the answers. I know how to make tough decisions. I am open minded and collaborative.
The present school board has been disappointing and dysfunctional for our schools, staff and community. Their lack of team effort, effectively managing school operations, communications with staff and community, responsibilities to its duties, policies and giving leadership to the school district as a whole has hurt this school district in trust, school budget, staff morale and loss student enrollment. Not everything can be blamed or put on the school board or district. The achievement gap remains. We need home and community involvement with positive influences and role models as well as from our schools staff. Have parents provide a good home environment that consists of good values, morals and work ethics. We need to keep our schools disciplined and structured. Rules, regulations and laws apply to everyone.
I feel that my 32 years as a business owner, managing money, employees and customers with good business ethics along with a strong voice and leadership skills will move our school district in the right direction.
VOTE THRONDSON for a Better Direction, bringing back community respect, trust and beneficial education to our schools.

Being dishonest is not a good trait for an local elected official
postbulletin.typepad.com/.../being-dishonest-is-not-a-good-trait-for-an-l...
This race is the reason I posted this entry. I left the forums absolutely disgusted with what I heard from Terry Throndson. My most basic qualification for any candidate is a level of empathy and integrity. I feel we will get neither with Mr. Throndson. Hear are 2 paraphrased quotes from Mr. Throndson.
“82% of the district budget goes to teachers and staff; that doesn’t leave much for kids.”
“My business taxes went up 1400+% last year and 300% this year.”
News flash: our kids derive value from those teachers, that is why we have them. Also his tax number is either manipulated, a lie, or he failed 6th grade math, or some combination. Being dishonest is not a good trait for an local elected official. I did request that the Post Bulletin fact-check the second statement.
I left the forum thinking that the only reason Mr. Throndson wants to be on the school board is to lower his own taxes. If this is his goal he should be running for Governor as he has been the number one cause of local property tax increases. I understand that Terry is a very hard worker and a good businessman, but the school board needs leaders dedicated to the quality of our educational system.
Conversly Michael Resman may be one of the best candidates in the race. He is knowledgeable, patient, and running for all the right reasons.

NORA DOOLEY
PhD in neurobiology and dedication to science education
Thank you for being an engaged member of our community and for taking the time to inform yourself about our upcoming District 535 School Board election! My name is Nora Dooley and I am running for Seat #5. My extensive experience in public service and education will serve this community well as we continue to grow. I will not only work very hard, but effectively, to make District #535 the best public school system in Minnesota and to provide a bright future for all our kids.
My dedication to community service is longstanding, and I know a great deal about the financial and operational challenges that our schools are facing. It is important to have a school board member that is willing to get ahead of these issues now. When asked to join the district's Core Planning Team two years ago, I did not hesitate to serve. Together with other community members and staff, we created the Strategic Plan that is now followed by all of Rochester Public Schools. We continue to meet to monitor the progress of Strategic Plan implementation. I have also served on the District’s Ad Hoc Budget Reduction Committee and the Four Day School Week assessment panel.
My experience with fiscal management, collaborative bargaining and public accountability is extensive. These are the essential skills needed to be a successful school board member. Having completed my eight year term on the Rochester Parks & Recreation Commission this June, I am now ready to dedicate my time and effort to serving on our school board. As the Parks Commission was created by City Charter, it is its own governing body. Very much like the school board, we worked to determine our own operating budget and capital improvements funding, approved contracts, hired and evaluated the Superintendent of Parks, in addition to setting policy for the entire department. The Parks Department has over 800 seasonal employees as well as dozens of full time staff.
We can all make a difference in our schools – especially parents. While my daughter, Sarah Anne Uhm, was at Lincoln from kindergarten through grade 8, there were lots of opportunities for me to participate at school. In addition to helping kids in the classroom, I always worked on the Scholastic Book Fair, serving as chair for the last four years, which helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for books for the library. As well, Lincoln holds an annual auction where I served as the Bank Chair for the last four years Sarah was at Lincoln.
I have had the opportunity to advocate, educate and mediate for practices and policies that respect and honor all members of our community. I would bring this important perspective to my work as a school board member. I was appointed to the Olmsted County Human Rights Commission five years ago by the County Board, and elected as the Chair of that Commission for the past four years. As a Commission, we routinely field over 600 calls per year to resolve conflicts encountered by Rochester and Olmsted County residents and connect them with resources at the local and state level.
My commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. Given my PhD in neurobiology and dedication to science education, I was asked to join the Friends of Quarry Hill Nature Center Board of Directors over nine years ago. With over 38,000 school child visits per year, the Friends of Quarry Hill Nature Center staff of teachers and naturalists provides key components of our schools’ science curriculum in a natural setting. As we grow as a community, being part of the dynamic team at Quarry Hill continues to be one of my most gratifying experiences.
Given my substantial work and involvement in Rochester, I have been very fortunate to receive the endorsement of several outstanding leaders in this community and in greater Minnesota. Just a few examples of these community leaders, include Lt. Commander Kendall Lee; public officials, Ardell Brede and Stephanie Podulke; former school board members, Dr. Paul Scanlon and Kay Batchelder; business owners, Anne and Randy Wobschall and Lynn Wong; members of our religious communities, Reverend Dr. Sparks and Allan Witz. Lastly, several years ago during my time on the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors, I had the privilege of meeting former vice-president Walter Mondale and he then encouraged me to run for office. It is a great honor to say that Mr. Mondale, a champion of education and our children, has also agreed to endorse my campaign.

She has touched many lives during 40 years of teaching in Rochester Public Schools. Parents, teachers, mentees and students often stop Jean to say "you made a difference."Jean recently retired, and determined to continue her commitment to preparing all kids for success, she became a candidate for school board. She is uniquely qualified. Jean's educational background (a Ph.D in education), her experience teaching in secondary and post-secondary education, her ongoing participation and demonstrated leadership in the Rochester community will serve her well in this position.Jean sees the opportunities to create a world-class education system in Rochester. She also sees the challenges. Her knowledge and understanding of education, the district and issues facing our rapidly growing and changing community will contribute to the important decisions ahead. Education is an essential component of the planned growth.Jean's ability to listen respectfully and bring people together and her commitment to community engagement, to building partnerships and to ensuring accountability will bring thoughtful reason to discussion, planning and tracking of decisions. Her quick wit also will be an asset. To learn more about Jean, go to www.jeanmarvinforschoolboard.com.Please vote for Marvin in the Aug. 12 primary election to assure her place on the November ballot.Susan Ahlquis
