Rochester Minnesota City Council Races 2018

Rochester Minnesota City Council Races 2018

Endorsemement:
Conservative/Republican pick: Patrick Keane
Progressive/Democratic pick:  Heather Holmes

Patrick Keane

Rating: not very conservative, but largely lacking in in-fashion PC buzzwords like equity, safe, inclusive, liveable wage, and that's a good thing. I like IBM career vs. independent marketing and communications consultant, sounds like community organizer. Establishment democrats like former mayor Brede like Holmes.

Career: Retired IBM

Activities: Board Member and Chairman of the Rochester Area Family YMCA, Finance Committee Chair and a Parish Trustee for Resurrection Catholic Church. Additionally, Patrick was a classroom volunteer with National Engineering Week and Junior Achievement as well as a volunteer coach for youth basketball, soccer, and baseball.

Housing: Coalition for Rochester Area Housing, along with Olmsted County, Mayo Clinic and the Rochester Area Foundation PostBulletin: city must partner with the private sector, versus government taking the lead. I support the city's $500,000 contribution to the Coalition For Rochester Area Housing. I support local groups like Habitat, "In The City For Good" and Bear Creek Church. All contribute to solutions.

Transportation: PostBulletin: Currently, 83 percent of the people (patients, shoppers, workers, etc.) coming into downtown drive, and 90 percent are daily workforce, single-passenger commuters looking for parking. Our transportation options are not working well enough and cannot scale with projected growth. The best alternatives are improved park-and-ride, better access to city rapid transit and safer alternatives for pedestrians and bicyclists. This will address not only peak congestion, but our overall transportation issues, including parking shortages.

Heather Holmes

Rating: very liberal and full of corporate politically correct buzzwords. She admitted she voted for Hillary Clinton and if you did, and believe that Kavanaugh is a lying sexual predator, Holmes is for you.

Career: television journalist Norwalk CT, now independent marketing and communications consultant with over two decades of experience. Vice president of marketing and project manager of the Journey to Growth initiative in Rochester

Buzzwords: affordable housing, livable wages, equity, Every deserves quality of life that includes a safe and inclusive environment. Pledges to stop the burden of a unmaintainable mortgage or rent can cripple a household budget

Housing: supports Bear Creek Church like Keane

Traffic:  use adaptive traffic signals as opposed to the conventional time-of-day signals (not as effective as more public transportation)

Party: voted for Hillary Clinton

Mayor Ardell Brede (endorsed the entire DFL team including governor Dayton in 2010), Council President Randy Staver and business leader John Wade During the meeting, Myhrom asked Holmes about her vote in the 2016 presidential election. Holmes answered that she voted for Hillary Clinton.

PUBLIC SAFETY
To live our lives completely, we must all feel safe in our community and neighborhoods. Every citizen deserves quality of life that includes a ***safe and inclusive environment.*** [pc buzzwords] It should include collaboration among the city, law enforcement, citizens and neighborhood organizations
AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL CITIZENS
Housing is an issue in Rochester and our surrounding communities. The burden of a unmaintainable mortgage or rent can cripple a household budget [does this mean price controls?]

What is the Journey to Growth Initiative?
OBJECTIVE: BECOME A MORE INCLUSIVE REGION Strategies to build awareness of important local programs and agencies, develop additional capacity and connections, and better embed discussions of inclusive diversity in community dialogues are necessary to fully embrace and capitalize on our region’s unique mix of races, ethnicities, cultures, faiths, and lifestyles.... Increase awareness and utilization of existing diversity resources Formalize dialogue and outreach to foster greater community inclusion Assess the need to create community centers with on-site services that meet the needs of specific ethnic and cultural constituencies

Formally, he was a Board Member and Chairman of the Rochester Area Family YMCA, active with C4 (a local Arts support organization) and the Finance Committee Chair and a Parish Trustee for Resurrection Catholic Church. Additionally, Patrick was a classroom volunteer with National Engineering Week and Junior Achievement as well as a volunteer coach for youth basketball, soccer, and baseball.

Keane referred to the city’s involvement in the new Coalition for Rochester Area Housing, along with Olmsted County, Mayo Clinic and the Rochester Area Foundation and said, “The positive side of this is, we have a lot of demand for employees,” which increases pressure on housing options.
